Community Service Society’s Vice President of Health Initiatives Elisabeth Benjamin, who also oversees the CHA program, was quoted in a New York Times article about rising health insurance costs, which hurt consumers and small businesses. The article profiles a former CHA client, Allan Evans, who called CHA seeking help with a 270 percent premium increase for his family’s small business. A CHA advocate helped him complain about the increase, file a Freedom of Information request to get to the bottom of why his rates were skyrocketing, and understand the rate review process. Fortunately, Evans then became eligible for coverage under his employer’s insurance and CHA assisted him through the insurance transition.
As more and more health insurance companies propose rate hikes, it is important for consumers and employers to know that they have a right to object to such increases. CHA can help individuals find alternative coverage and write and file a complaint to state regulators.
